Alan has been making wood fired pottery for over thirty years and currently teaches ceramics at the University of Manitoba, School of Art. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and scholarships. His work has been shown nationally throughout Canada and internationally in the United States, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand and France.
He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and his Masters of Fine Arts MFA from the University of North Dakota.
Alan’s work is part of many private and public collections around the world. He covers a wide range of functional and artistic pieces including cups, teapots, casseroles and bowls, serving platters, jars and large vases.
All the pottery is fired in a wood burning kiln for a period of between forty-eight and fifty-six hours. Wood is added on an average of every five to ten minutes throughout the entire cycle until a temperature of 1380 C is gradually reached. Approximately three cords of waste pine slabs are used for each firing. The kiln requires more than two days before it is cool enough for the work to be taken out.
Alan’s work can also be found in Winnipeg at the Stoneware Gallery 778 Corydon Avenue and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
